Ten Green Bottles


The story Remember Atita by Jackee Budesta Batanda (one of the four stories included in Dancing with Strangers -compulsory reading for our students in 1st Bachillerato) starts with the lyrics of "Ten Green Bottles", a popular song for children in the United Kingdom. This is a sad story and with this song the writer makes the bottles represent the friends that disappear because of the war -I think...

Repetition is very frequent in songs for little children and in the case of this one a single verse is repeated, each time with one bottle fewer, from ten to no bottles; there are different versions of the verbs used in the song: standing, hanging or sitting. This is the version we listened to -and sang- in class, so here it is for you to practise at home...
