2010: The Year in Review

Another year is over and it´s difficult to pick a piece of news from it so I´ll let others do it for me. Here on the left is the creator of the social network site Facebook, Mark Zuckerberg, the "person of the year," according to TIME magazine. Do you agree with their choice? Is he the person of the year for you? If not, who would you choose?

This is how Google summarises 2010 following the searches throughout the year:

The Week in Rap summarises the main news of the year in their video called "The Year in Rap." which you can find below; click here to read the lyrics:

And here´s an infographic by Yahoo, a visualization of 2010’s biggest stories, broken down into 4 categories: Inspiring Acts, Natural Disasters, Good Sports, Financial Uprisings, and Survivor Stories. The Guardian's interactive review, on the other hand,  allows you to click through the pictures to see how 2010 unfolded day-by-day or month-by-month. You can also build your own review of the year by adding a story per month to create a personalised interactive to share with others.(Do let me know if you decide to do this! )

What about the best ideas of 2010? The New York Times suggests, among others, the guitar that stays in tune, the meat dress, human milk for sale, the emotional spell check (my favourite). Read about all these ideas here. Students 13 and older are invited to comment, why don´t you? (for privacy policy reasons, they will not publish student comments that include a last name, so just mention your first or first and middle names). Answer any of these questions: Which is your favorite idea, and why? Which would most help our world? Which are not worth pursuing? Do any of the events that made the list seem especially significant to you? What didn’t make The Times’s list that you think should have? (Don´t forget to let me know if -or should I say WHEN?- you send a comment!!).

The New York Times has also published the 2010 Crossword, which you may do online or print. Click here to check the solutions

What will you remember most from 2010? Read here what others wrote about this. You may also express yourself.

As for images of 2010, here are the links to LIFE , NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC, BOSTON BIG PICTURE: PART 1, PART 2 and PART 3 (Boston Big Picture is always my favourite webpage when dealing with photos). In the internet you can also find photos with any superlative you may think of: the most amazing science images, the most surprising images, the 10 biggest of...technology stories, international stories, food stories, in memoriam...

And some music to conclude: a sound-collage tribute to musicians who died in 2010 made by "The New York Times"; perhaps you´ll discover someone you like and didn´t know.

I wish you all the very best for 2011!

    - Firstly, I have to confess that I really lilke these kind of
videos; besides the universal appeal of seeing thousands of colourful
images with an emotional soundtrank behind, I think it´s useful, at
least to remember a small part of ourselves, of our lives (sometimes
deliberaly chosen, in my opinion....) However, it´s just that, right??
just remembering for a few seconds what has happened on the whole
world until the next special decade´s summary.

  2. Andrea, I´m glad you enjoyed the videos. By the way, what do you mean when you say "deliberately chosen"? I guess when you choose the most important images or pieces of news from a whole year you must have some arguments to do so - it must be very difficult, though, so many things happen in a year!!!

  3. yeah!! of course!!! but.. lately, I have this feeling...or sensation, I realise that..., for example the same piece of news is told completely different according to the newspaper or to the TV programme. I know that each newspaper (for example) has his own point of view, it´s totally understandable and fair, but sometimes it´s just obvious that each one informs following his own interests.

  4. Andrea, you are a very mature teenager.
I am really lucky to have a bunch of students, you for one, really willing to learn about the world and life in general.
