The Dangers of Social Networks

Dear students, this is a post for you to discuss with your parents. This is the story:

Who ? a father and his 15-year-old daughter

Where ? The USA

When ? A couple of weeks ago

What ? The daughter posted a comment in Facebook where she complained about her parents. The father (an IT expert) read the comment and decided to reply back in a video

Why ? The father thought the girl´s comments were unfair and disrespectful

How ? He made a video and posted it in Facebook. He not only read his daughter´s message in front of the camera but argued most of the points she mentioned and ended up.... well, in a very unexpected way

Read the father´s words before watching the video (Watch it till the end, I bet you´ll be surprised - to say the least):

My daughter thought it would be funny/rebellious/cool to post on her Facebook wall just how upset she was and how unfair her life here is; how we work her too hard with chores, never pay her for chores, and just in general make her life difficult.

She chose to share this with the entire world on Facebook and block her parent's from seeing it. Well, umm... she failed. As of the end of this video, she won't have to worry anymore about posting inappropriate things on Facebook...

Maybe a few kids can take something away from this... If you're so disrespectful to your parents and yourself as to post this kind of thing on Facebook, you're deserving of some tough love. Today, my daughter is getting a dose of tough love.

I am sorry there´s no script for this video, I know you´ll have to make an effort to understand it but I´m sure you´ll get a good idea of the problem and its solution.

I would love to hear your comments about:
  • the girl´s action
  • the father´s reaction
  • the end of the video ( I must admit I was pretty shocked when I saw it)

Hi Rosa! I have just watched the video and I'm pretty shocked, too. I think that the girl's action wasn't right at all - she has some responsabilities she must fulfill, but it doesn't mean she doesn't "have a life". Anyway, if she's angry with her parents for some reasons, she should speak with them, but not posting all those things - some of them were very painful, I think - on Facebook!
However, I think that the Father's attitude wasn't right either. If you solve a problem with a gun, well, that says a lot about you… And with that thing, I don’t think he will teach his daughter to respect him – probably he'll only teach her to fear him.

I think that neither the father nor the daughter behave well.
On the one hand the girl is very spoilt, because she wants to get everything done, moreover she doesn´t speak well about their parents in a social network. However she is a teenager and not an adult.
On the other hand her father is an old person and therefore he should behave in a more responsible way.
In conclusion, I think that the girl wasn´t brought up well and for this reason she behaves like this. If her father behaved better, she would change her attitude

  4. Andrea, I agree with your first statement; it is difficult to judge people´s behavior when you do not know them well but, from what we know, neither of them did the right thing.
