Living in Whittier, Alaska, Pros and Cons

Whittier, Alaska, is a peculiar town where most people (180 out of 200) live and work in one14-story apartment building. Most residents don´t venture out unless they have to during the winter - and winter starts in early October and stays for 7 months of near-total darkness.

The only way in and out of Whittier is a single lane, one-way tunnel that changes direction every half hour. The tunnel closes at 10pm every night, 5pm in the winter. No exceptions.

Erika Thompson teaches grade school in this town; in this video she talks about her daily life there.
