And Even More Conditionals

Do you know singer-songwriter Melody Gardot? In case you don´t, this part of her biography will make you want to listen to her:
While cycling in Philadelphia in November 2003 she was hit by a car whose driver had ignored a red traffic light. In the accident she suffered serious head and spinal injuries and her pelvis was broken in two places. Because of these severe injuries she had to lie on her back in a hospital bed for a year.
As a further consequence of her injuries she had to re-learn simple tasks such as brushing her teeth and walking. The most noticeable effect of the neural injuries she suffered is that she was left hyper-sensitive to both light and sound, therefore requiring her to wear dark sunglasses at nearly all times to protect her eyes. The accident also resulted in both long and short term memory problems and difficulty with her sense of time. Gardot has described coping with this as like "climbing Mount Everest every day" as she often wakes with no memory of what she has to do that day.
Prompted by a doctor who believed music would help her brain injury drastically improve, Gardot began writing music after her accident and since then often speaks and advocates in favour of using music for therapy.

If you already knew this singer, I´m sure you know this song, If the Stars Were Mine..., and you´´ll enjoy the video; if you have never heard her sing, read the lyrics first, enjoy the nice wishes there, and then listen to her song. I am sure you´ll want to hear more and more songs by her because her voice is so soft and soothing. Do you agree?

If the Stars Were Mine, Lyrics:

If the stars were mine
I'd give them all to you
I'd pluck them down right from the sky
and leave it only blue
I would never let the sun forget to shine upon your face
so when others would have rain clouds you'd have only sunny days
If the stars were mine
I'd tell you what I'd do
I'd put the stars right in a jar and give 'em all to you

If the birds were mine
I'd tell them when to sing
I'd make them sing a sonnet when your telephone would ring
I would put them there inside the square, whenever you went out
so there'd always be sweet music whenever you would walk about
If the birds were mine
I'd tell you what I'd do
I'd teach the birds such lovely words and make 'em sing for you
I'd teach the birds such lovely words and make 'em sing for you

If the world was mine
I'd paint it gold and green
I'd make the oceans orange for a brilliant color scheme
I would color all the mountains, make the sky forever blue
So the world would be a painting and I'd live inside with you
If the world was mine
I'd tell you what I'd do
I'd wrap the world in ribbons and then give it all to you
I'd teach the birds such lovely words and make 'em sing for you
I'd put those stars right in a jar...and..........
give them all...to you.......

What would you do if the stars, the birds and the world were yours?

Thanks, Monsa, for telling me about her -and for the CD!

I didn’t know this singer until I watch the video. I think that her biography is amazing and I can’t imagine what I would do in her case. I believe that her doctor’s advice is a good one; I think that music is a good way to escape from the problems. Apart from that, I want to say that I like the song and especially, I like her beautiful voice.

  2. Jacobo, I´m so glad to hear from you; first of all, because of what you say about Melody Gardot: it´s nice to see that people your age and my age can agree on likes about music. Secondly, because you hadn´t sent any comments for a long time -I hope this means you are feeling better.
As for Melody´s unfortunate circumstances, I believe there are many people out there who overcome very difficult moments in life with a very positive attitude and they should be an example for the rest of us; compared to theirs, our life is so easy, isn´t it?

I didn't know her before you showed this video in class, but I listened to some songs of her and I like her! She has a really sweet voice. I agree with Jacobo, her doctor gave her a great advice.

  4. Laura, so you´ve been listening to her ever since you got home... I guess as a teacher nothing can make me happier than knowing that my students pay attention to what we do in class and want to learn more about it afterwards.
By the way, Laura, check this post: http://inglesiesollosgrandes.blogspot.com/2010/09/vocabulary-advice-piece-of-advice-news.html
