One More Speech

This is what is going on in our classes lately: 2nd BAC students are working hard on their graduation speeches, 1st BAC students have just finished the coursebook unit on gossip and celebrities and, lo and behold, on February 29th, Oprah Winfrey, Lady Gaga and Lady Gaga´s mother, Cynthia Germanotta, were in Harvard launching a foundation -or a movement- called "Born This Way."

Let me give you some background to what was going on there.

Last year, a 15-year-old student, Jamie Hubley committed suicide in Canada, apparently unable to cope with the pressure and bullying at school because he was gay. After his suicide, Lady Gaga decided to start a move to make bullying illegal, which is the origin of the Born This Way Foundation (= BTWF). However, rather than putting the emphasis on anti-bullying, the pillars of the Foundation are what Lady Gaga defines as SSO: Skills, Safety and Opportunity to promote youth-empowerment

BTWF wants to address issues like self-confidence, well-being, anti-bullying... to create an environment that allows youth to express their individuality and to give them the skills they need to encourage self-expression and promote civic engagement so that "each individual is accepted and loved as the person they were born to be."

There are quite a few things worth paying attention to in this video -apart from Lady Gaga´s looks:

  • the introductions (how Lady Gaga introduces her mother, for instance)
  • they way the "show" develops, i.e, how they go from the introduction, to the speeches, to the questions
  • how natural and easy-going the conversations flow
  • how everybody thanks everybody else for every small detail
  • how openly they accept they do not know the answer to some of the questions
  • what else do you think is worth mentioning?

I am sorry there´s no script for this video but I am sure you can get a pretty accurate idea of the content.

Remember these entries about bullying: click here

First Shakira, now Lady Gaga, who will be next?

As for bullying, have a look at this info graph about student bullying in the USA, do you think the situation in Spain is similar?

And last, but not least, some food for thought

i think that both initiatives ( Shakira´s foundation and foundation od Lady Gaga ) are very important actions for the future of the children. it isn´t important where they are born. the importan thing is that the children get a good education. Moreover, they can avoid similar cases to Janie Hubley´s. he couldn´t stand the pressure of studies snd commited suicide. this case is rare, but it´s a problem, an d a solution is needed, which is to take the pressure from the children.
