Analysing Commercials

2nd BAC students, here´s some help for your oral test about commercials

Useful language:

  • concept of the commercial: classical / original...
  • atmosphere: sad / romantic / funny / crazy / mysterious / relaxed / ordinary / tense / ironical
  • it appeals to :  our feelings / our emotions / our intellect / our senses / our sense of humor / our paternal/maternal instincts / our desire to be in good health / our wish to be beautiful/desirable / our love for nature/animals / our desire for exoticism...
  • we associate this product/service with:  luxury / fame / beauty / family / fitness / happiness / well-being…
  • motiovations exploited: prestige / freedom / beauty / pleasure / creativity / snobbery / health / science / ambition / youth / safety / tradition / wealth / sex / fear / tenderness / comfort / love / attraction / power …
  • What I like in this commercial is …
  • What I don't like in this commercial is …
  • What I would change is ...

Things to consider:

  • What group, company or organization is responsible for the ad?
  • What is the ad for? How do you know? Is it easy to tell?
  • What audience is the ad targeting? What does the ad say about the people who buy the product or service?
  • Who appears in the ad? (celebrities, plain folk…). Analyse their behavior or attitude.
  • Does the ad appeal to emotion (pity, fear, vanity, happiness, nostalgia...) or to logic?
  • What advertising techniques can you recognize in the ad: individuality, humor, `bandwagon´technique...? How are they used? What do they emphasize?
  • What kind of language is used?
  • Does the slogan stick?
You may either choose an ad from the tag "Commercial" in the blog (Click here) or opt for one of these
